New Outdoor Gear Shop Opens in Millcreek With Focus on Community and Sustainability

Lone Pine Gear Exchange offers the outdoor community a place to buy, sell, and repair their gear. The shop also includes a coffee shop, plastic-free refill station, and gathering space for outdoor-focused events. 

When it comes to outdoor gear, Lone Pine Gear Exchange aims to be a one-stop-shop for the Salt Lake City outdoor community. The new business just opened in the Millcreek area and offers retail, consignment, ski tuning, gear repair, as well as a plastic-free refill station, coffee shop and gathering space. With the belief that “small acts can make big impacts,” Lone Pine seeks to keep outdoor gear in circulation and out of landfills. The gear shop has also committed to plant one tree for every sale made through a partnership with One Tree Planted. 

Located at 2835 East 3300 South, the retail space features new and used gear for sports such as skiing, snowboarding, biking, camping, and rafting. Lone Pine offers ski tuning and gear repair via its Wintersteiger Tune Shop, as well as two industrial sewing machines for softgood repairs like zipper replacements, and tears in jackets or tents. The shop will also repurpose irreparable items into things like reusable shopping bags, fanny packs, hydration packs, and down booties.  

 The Shred Ready coffee bar downstairs pours Salt Lake City Roasting coffee, Townshend Tea, and serves pastries and breakfast burritos by Lone Pine bakery - customers can grab a coffee in the shop or drive through on their way up to the mountain. Lastly, in an effort to reduce single-use plastic, the shop also has a “refill station” where customers can buy everyday products like soap and shampoo by the ounce, or find alternatives for plastic items like produce bags, floss, and toothbrushes.   

The husband and wife duo behind Lone Pine, Ben Johnson and Katy Jackson, are no strangers to the outdoor industry. They have owned and managed similar businesses in the past, but both were passionate about creating a community space that truly reflected their values. “Like our customers, we live here because we love the outdoors. We wanted to ensure that we were providing our local community with resources to repair the gear they love, resell  items they no longer need, and of course find any new or used items they need for outdoor adventures,” said Katy. “We also wanted to make a concrete environmental commitment, so we are thrilled to partner with One Tree Planted.”

Lone Pine is also opening its doors to outdoor organizations who may need space to host events. They just hosted their first event earlier this month with the Utah Avalanche Center in partnership with Roha Brewing, and have another event with Steven Clark, an avalanche forecaster for UDOT, scheduled for Friday February 21 at 7:00. “We are really excited to have a space to gather our community,” said Ben. “We hope people feel welcome to come and hang out, and that organizations will reach out if they want to utilize the space to further their cause.” 

Although Lone Pine had a soft opening in January, they plan to make their launch more official this week. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Millcreek Business Council and Mayor Jeff Silvesstrini on Tuesday, February 18 at 1:30pm. In celebration, the shop will be offering free ski and snowboard tunes for all customers that drop off their gear between 1-2pm that day.
